RWD Taco, loaded, xtra cab, 5-speed, with the 3.4L V6 HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG But notice the rear: the tailgate paint doesn’t quite match, the handle is badly oversprayed entirely (should be black!), and the bumper is aftermarket. I’m thinking this bad boy was rear-ended at some point.

But the carfax doesn’t show any of that.
Sounds like unreported damage, and the owner traded it in instead of fixing it maybe? Then whoever got this got a gate off a mismatched Taco, jizzed “close-enough” paint all over it, didn’t mask of the tailgate lever, couldn’t be bothered to grab a factory rear bumper, and here we are today.
Or maybe the back end was starting to rust out so they replaced the gate and bumper? In that case, all the more reason to walk (damn you, Taco subframes).
That all said, a RWD 3.4L manual taco is exceptionally uncommon. SAD!

Do you have to report a tailgate? I’ve fucked up a couple tailgates over the years and I don’t think they are reported as an accident. It is a weird bumper.

If you have insurance, you’re required to report any accident, even if you don’t make a claim.

Well, you could take it to be inspected if you really like it. It might not be a disaster. But the way it was handled doesn’t make me optimistic that the repairs were top flight.

In addition, it may also be a cosmetic fix. Who knows what else happened under there.

Since it’s being sold by a dealer should be no big deal to get them to toss it on a lift so you can check underneath for rust. If they have a body shop they should be able to spot whether there was damage or just a replacement gate and bumper.

I can tell you that the color is red, as noted quite often in the Carfax. Probably backed into something, fubar’d the bumper/tailgate and sourced the cheapest replacements they could find. Especially since the bed itself looks good. Rear ended, I’d imagine the entire bed would’ve been replaced and had equally bad paint as the tailgate.
Looks quite clean otherwise.

when my old ‘90 Nissan hardbody was stolen they took the tailgate. I got it back sans tailgate, bed box, radio, headrests, etc. The repair shop put a new tailgate on it but the paint never really matched very well since it was 10 years newer than the rest of the truck...

No matter what, this motor and transmission combo is golden. The v6 is lovely to operate....
